Tidelands Health radiation oncology program earns reaccreditation

Independent experts have again affirmed the high quality of care available through Tidelands Health Cancer Care Network, the region’s most comprehensive provider of cancer care.

The radiation oncology program at Tidelands Health Cancer Care Network, an affiliate of MUSC Health, recently earned full reaccreditation from the American College of Radiology, the nation’s oldest and most widely accepted radiation oncology accrediting body. The health system’s radiation oncology program is one of only a dozen such programs in South Carolina to earn the distinction.Cancer Care Network logo

“This accreditation reaffirms we apply best practices to provide our patients with high-quality, safe care,” said Dr. Sarah Thurman, medical director of the radiation oncology program. “It’s a credit to our team’s commitment to cancer patients.”

Accreditation from the American College of Radiology is awarded following an intensive, impartial evaluation that includes an on-site survey and a review of a program’s policies and procedures, treatment approach, medical and support staff, equipment and quality assurance programs. The process also includes a case review to assess the overall quality and effectiveness of treatment that was provided to select patients.

“Accreditation is important because it demonstrates to patients and clinicians that we are providing state-of-the-art treatment that meets nationally recognized standards,” said Tim Laugh, director of oncology services. “It validates the strength of our program and provides a comprehensive report we can use for continuous improvement.”

With reaccreditation from the American College of Radiology, Tidelands Health Cancer Care Network remains our region’s only triple-accredited cancer care provider. The network is also accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers and the Commission on Cancer, a program of the American College of Surgeons.

In addition, Tidelands Health remains the only cancer care provider in the area affiliated with a National Institutes of Cancer designated cancer center, MUSC Health’s Hollings Cancer Center.

The Tidelands Health Cancer Care Network offers care at locations in Murrells Inlet, Georgetown and Myrtle Beach.

Tidelands Health is the region’s largest health care provider and MUSC Health affiliate, serving the Carolinas at four hospitals and more than 70 outpatient locations. More than 2,500 employee, physician and volunteer partners work side by side with our communities to transform the health of our region – promoting wellness, preventing illness, encouraging recovery and restoring health.
