Unexpected visit warms hearts of Tidelands Health cancer patients

Ronald Breno received a welcome, if unexpected, visit during his chemotherapy treatment on Monday.

The Garden City resident, who is battling pancreatic and liver cancer, was undergoing chemotherapy at Tidelands Health Cancer Care Network at Murrells Inlet when representatives from a local vehicle dealership and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society stopped by.

They delivered 70 gift bags containing blankets, stuffed animals and craft kits for Tidelands Health cancer patients.A gift bag is presented to Tidelands Health cancer patient Ronald Breno

“It makes me feel good that people care,” said Breno, who said he’s been very pleased with the care he’s received through the Tidelands Health Cancer Care Network. “If I have to be somewhere, this is a very comfortable place to be and everyone is very friendly.”

The bags were donated as part of a national partnership between Subaru and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through the “Subaru Loves to Care” program. The Hadwin-White Subaru dealership in Conway sponsored the gift bags given to patients at Tidelands Health.

“We just want people to know we are thinking about them,” said Jordan Hadwin, general manager of Hadwin-White. “Certainly, cancer has affected all of our lives to some degree. We just want to bring a little cheer in what is a difficult time.”

Timothy Laugh, director of cancer services at Tidelands Health, said the health system was grateful to be chosen as a site for the gift bag donations. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society selected the Tidelands Health Cancer Care Network following conversations with patients.

“We want to offer a comfortable, supportive environment for our cancer patients as they receive the treatments they need to beat the disease,” Laugh said. “Gifts like these help us achieve that goal.”

Tidelands Health Cancer Care Network, an affiliate of MUSC Health, is the most comprehensive provider of cancer care in the region. Care is provided in Myrtle Beach, Murrells Inlet and Georgetown.
