Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital Earns National Certification For Spine Surgery
Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital has earned national certification for its spine surgery program, becoming just the second hospital in South Carolina to earn the prestigious recognition.
The Joint Commission, which accredits and certifies nearly 21,000 health care organizations and programs across the United States, granted Tidelands Waccamaw its “Gold Seal of Approval” for spine surgery certification. The Gold Seal of Approval is a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to providing safe and effective patient care.
Tidelands Waccamaw earned certification following a rigorous on-site review. Joint Commission experts evaluated compliance with national disease-specific care standards and spine surgery-specific requirements. Clinical practice guidelines and performance measures also were assessed.
“This achievement underscores our unwavering dedication to pursuing the highest possible standards of patient care and safety,” said Dr. Philip Dulberger, senior vice president and chief medical officer of Tidelands Health. “At the end of the day, high standards translate into superior outcomes for our patients.”
Established in 2002 and awarded for a two-year period, The Joint Commission’s disease-specific care certification evaluates clinical programs across the continuum of care and addresses three core areas:
- Compliance with consensus-based national standards;
- Effective use of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care; and
- An organized approach to performance measurement and improvement activities.
The Joint Commission spine surgery accreditation is the latest in a series of recognitions earned by Tidelands Waccamaw.
Tidelands Waccamaw also holds Joint Commission certification in stroke, childbirth and hip and knee replacement. In 2015, the hospital was named one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Orthopedic Surgery by Healthgrades, a leading independent health care quality review group. And The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit watchdog that serves as a voice for health care consumers, recognized Tidelands Waccamaw as one of the nation’s Top 98 hospitals in 2016. Tidelands Waccamaw was the only hospital in South Carolina to earn the distinction.
