Tidelands Health MUSC family medicine residency program earns accreditation

October 12, 2016

A new family medicine residency program at Tidelands Health today earned initial accreditation from the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education. The health system expects to welcome its first class of eight residents in July 2017.

“This is a landmark day for Tidelands Health, for our region and for the future of health care in our community,” said Bruce Bailey, the health system’s president and CEO. “Our family medicine residency program will bring new doctors to our region and improve patient care by promoting a culture of learning and innovation.”

The Tidelands Health MUSC Family Medicine Residency Program will be a three-year program that provides post-graduate training for doctors who have completed their medical degrees. The residents will treat patients at a new, state-of-the-art facility under construction on Holmestown Road in Horry County.

The residency program has been developed with support from the Medical University of South Carolina, which will provide curriculum and some faculty. Tidelands Health physicians will also serve as faculty members.

Dr. Phil Dulberger, Tidelands’ chief medical officer, said the Tidelands residency program will be particularly appealing to new doctors because it emphasizes physician resiliency and wellness.

“Medical residency is challenging by any standard, and residents often deal with stress and burnout,” Dr. Dulberger said. “Residents within the Tidelands program will have access to nutrition and wellness programs, exercise classes, meditation classes and more.”

The residency program will also include a focus on transformational leadership that will help physicians become high-impact leaders who understand the health care environment and who develop essential business and leadership skills.

“The establishment of the residency program is important for the entire Tidelands region, given the explosive growth occurring in local communities,” Bailey said. “Many physicians choose to establish their permanent medical practice in the community where they complete their residency.

“This program is truly an investment in our future, helping ensure we have highly skilled, well-trained physicians here to care for the needs of our growing population.”
