Tidelands Health earns national ratings for medical excellence, patient safety

October 27, 2016

Area residents don’t have to leave home for safe, quality care that ranks among the best in the nation. It’s available at Tidelands Health hospitals right here in our community.

Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital is ranked in the Top 10 percent in the nation, the state and the region and No. 1 in the market for overall medical excellence in medical care. And Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital is ranked in the Top 10 percent nationally for patient safety in spinal surgery and spinal fusion procedures.

Tidelands Waccamaw is also ranked in the Top 10 percent nationally and regionally for patient safety in orthopedic care and women’s health.

The 2017 ratings are from CareChex, an information service of Quantros Inc. CareChex is an innovative medical quality rating system designed to help hospitals and health systems improve the quality of inpatient care and promote medical excellence to consumers, payer and employers.

“Whenever a loved one is hospitalized, we all want assurance that the care being provided is high quality and safe,” said Dr. Philip Dulberger, Tidelands Health senior vice president and chief medical officer.  “These ratings are particularly gratifying because they are based on process of care measures, outcomes and patient satisfaction.”

Tidelands Health also earned high marks for medical excellence and patient safety in several other areas. Both Tidelands Waccamaw and Tidelands Georgetown are rated in the Top 10 percent in the Palmetto State for medical excellence for heart attack treatment, and Tidelands Waccamaw is rated in the Top 10 percent in the state for patient safety for gastrointestinal care.

“From providing high-quality care to our orthopedic and heart attack patients to getting new moms and babies off to a safe, healthy start, our physicians and nurses strive to keep our patients safe and comfortable and deliver quality care so we can exceed expectations,” Dr. Dulberger said.

The CareChex medical excellence and patient safety distinctions are based on data from the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and patient satisfaction scores from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and System survey.

The medical excellence distinction is an overall measure of quality and encompasses performance across risk-adjusted mortality rates, risk-adjusted complication rates, inpatient quality indicators and patient safety indicators.  The patient safety designation is also based on patient safety performance data.

Dr. Thane Forthman, chief analytics officer of Quantros, said Tidelands Health has demonstrated its ability to provide high-quality care to the communities it serves.

“To receive an award in medical excellence and patient safety is an outstanding accomplishment for both the physicians and the hospital staff,” Dr. Forthman said. “We congratulate Tidelands Health on delivering high-quality, patient-centered care.”

The recognitions mark the second consecutive year that CareChex has recognized both hospitals for medical excellence and patient safety and are among numerous honors Tidelands Health has earned for quality and safety.

In December, Tidelands Waccamaw was named one of the nation’s 98 top hospitals by The Leapfrog Group, which measures hospitals’ performance on patient safety and quality.

Tidelands Waccamaw was also named one of America’s 100 best hospitals for orthopedic surgery in 2015 and was rated among the Top 10 percent in the nation for overall orthopedic services in 2015 by Healthgrades, the nation’s leading independent health care quality review group.

Tidelands Georgetown has been rated five stars by Healthgrades for treatment of heart attack, stroke, diabetic emergencies and defibrillator procedures in 2016.

Both Tidelands Waccamaw and Tidelands Georgetown have earned the prestigious Baby Friendly designation, and both hospitals are Joint Commission primary stroke centers and joint replacement centers of excellence. Tidelands Waccamaw also holds Joint Commission certification in childbirth and spine surgery.
