Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital Earns National Certification For Spine Surgery

Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital has joined a select group of South Carolina hospitals to earn The Joint Commission’s prestigious national certification for spine surgery.

The Joint Commission, which accredits and certifies nearly 21,000 health care organizations and programs across the United States, has granted Tidelands Georgetown its “Gold Seal of Approval” for spine surgery certification. The Gold Seal of Approval is a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to providing safe and effective patient care.

Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital is just the third hospital in South Carolina to earn the recognition. Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital became the second such hospital earlier this year.

Like Tidelands Waccamaw, Tidelands Georgetown earned certification following a rigorous on-site review. Joint Commission experts evaluated compliance with national disease-specific care standards and spine surgery-specific requirements. Clinical practice guidelines and performance measures also were assessed.

“The success of our hospitals in achieving this voluntary certification demonstrates our unwavering commitment to patient care,” said Dr. Philip Dulberger, senior vice president and chief medical officer of Tidelands Health. “At the end of the day, our goal is to help our patients achieve the best possible outcomes.”

Established in 2002 and awarded for a two-year period, The Joint Commission’s disease-specific care certification evaluates clinical programs across the continuum of care and addresses three core areas:

  • Compliance with consensus-based national standards;
  • Effective use of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care; and
  • An organized approach to performance measurement and improvement activities.

In addition to earning spine surgery certification, Tidelands Georgetown has received Joint Commission certification for hip and knee joint replacement, as well as certification as an advanced primary stroke center.

The hospital also has been recognized by CareChex for its spinal surgery and spinal fusion procedures. CareChex in its 2017 rankings rated Tidelands Georgetown in the Top 10 percent nationally in patient safety for both categories.
