Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital earns national award for cardiac care

August 25, 2016

Area residents can get safe, award-winning cardiac care close to home. For the fourth consecutive year, Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital has earned a prestigious award from the American College of Cardiology for cardiac care.

Tidelands Georgetown is one of only 36 hospitals nationwide to earn the Get with the Guidelines Gold Performance Achievement Award for 2016. The award recognizes the hospital for success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients. Specifically, the award honors Tidelands Georgetown for reaching a goal of treating patients at the top standard levels of care as outlined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations.

“Every second counts when someone is having a heart attack, and our cardiovascular team and our emergency personnel coordinate closely to follow these guidelines to save lives and improve outcomes of our heart attack patients,” said Julie Pope, director of Tidelands Georgetown’s cardiac catheterization lab.  “I am very proud of our team and even prouder that we can provide safe, quality care to our community.”

To earn the gold performance achievement award, a hospital must consistently follow certain treatment guidelines for eight consecutive quarters and meet specific performance standards, including standards for drug safety and overall care. Treatment guidelines include administering aspirin upon arrival and discharge, timely restoration of blood flow to the blocked artery, smoking cessation counseling and cardiac rehabilitation, among others.

“As a Gold Performance Award recipient, Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital has shown it is a leader in implementing standards of care and protocols for its patients,” said Dr. Deepak L. Bhatt, executive director of interventional cardiovascular programs at Brigham and Women’s Hospital Heart and Vascular Center and professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. “By meeting the requirements set forth in the registry and establishing a culture of providing guideline-recommended therapy, Tidelands Georgetown Memorial is saving lives and improving outcomes of heart attack patients.”

Tidelands Georgetown is an accredited chest pain center and recently began performing  elective PCIs, commonly known as angioplasty and stent insertion. Cardiologists have been performing emergency PCIs at the hospital since 1998.

According to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, heart disease was the leading cause of death in the Palmetto State in 2014.

Get with the Guidelines is a partnership between the American College of Cardiology Foundation and the American Heart Association. Treatment standards are based on the most current, science-based guidelines and establish a national standard for understanding and improving the quality, safety and outcomes of care provided for patients with coronary artery disease.
