Two area physicians elected to Tidelands Health board of trustees

June 3, 2015

Two area physicians with strong ties to the community have joined the Tidelands Health board of trustees.

Dr. T. Scott Ellison, a fellowship-trained spine surgeon with Tidelands Waccamaw Orthopaedics and Spine, has been elected to a two-year term to coincide with his term as chairman of the Tidelands Health Group executive committee. Dr. Christine Gerber, a partner in Carolina OB/GYN, will serve an initial three-year term.

H. McRoy Skipper Jr., CPA, chairman of the Tidelands Health board, said Drs. Ellison and Gerber bring a valuable perspective to the 16-member board, which provides strategic leadership for the largest health care provider in Georgetown and Horry counties.

“Dr. Gerber and Dr. Ellison bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the Tidelands Health board of trustees,” Skipper said. “As members of our community, they know the challenges many of our residents face. And as physicians who practice medicine in our hospitals, they are keenly aware that health care facilities must be strategic and adaptable to deliver excellent care and services. Their guidance and input will be invaluable as we plan for continued growth and success of Tidelands Health.”

A board-certified orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Ellison joined Tidelands Waccamaw Orthopaedics and Spine in 2012. Previously, he practiced spine surgery in both Charlotte and Salisbury, N.C.  Dr. Ellison earned his bachelor’s degree in zoology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his medical degree from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University. He completed his surgery internship at Wake Forest’s North Carolina Baptist Hospital and his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of South Alabama, where he was chief resident. He completed a fellowship in spine surgery at Carolinas Medical Center in 1997.  He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and North American Spine Society.

A longtime advocate for maternal and child health, Dr. Gerber has practiced obstetrics and gynecology in Georgetown County for nearly 20 years. She is medical director of obstetrics at Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital and was instrumental in efforts at both Tidelands Waccamaw and Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital to earn Baby Friendly designation. She is a past recipient of the Lewis Blackman Patient Safety Award and chaired the successful 2015 Georgetown County March of Dimes campaign.

Dr. Gerber is a graduate of Youngstown State University and earned her medical degree at Thomas Jefferson University’s Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. She completed her residency at Philadelphia’s Lankenau Hospital Medical Center, where she was chief resident. Dr. Gerber is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
