Monday, June 30, 2014

It’s the height of the vacation season and time to jump into the donor pool. That’s right, be a blood donor at the Waccamaw Community Hospital’s blood drive Friday, July 11, at Wachesaw Conference Center.

The drive will take place from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the center, located at 4367 Riverwood Drive across from the hospital in Murrells Inlet.

Donors will receive a free ice cream coupon and a box of Girl Scout cookies.

Appointments will take priority, but walk-ins are welcome. To make an appointment, call 843.652.1135 or go to http://www.redcrossblood.org.

According to Red Cross statistics, each year about 4 million people in the United States need blood. The current need is acute because officials say wintry weather in January and February sharply reduced the blood supply for the area, and the summer vacation season when the demand increases is fast approaching.

In addition having a valid ID, blood donors must be healthy, be at least 17 years old and weigh a minimum of 110 pounds.
