The Francis B. Ford Cancer Treatment Center Joins Prestigious National Organization

Thursday, January 17, 2008

Georgetown, SC - Georgetown Hospital System’s Francis B. Ford Cancer Treatment Center in Georgetown, has joined the Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC), the nation’s leading advocacy organization for issues affecting the delivery of quality cancer care. ACCC works with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the Government Accountability Office, the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission, and other key policy makers in Washington, D.C., to ensure patient access to quality cancer care in community cancer programs and in physician offices.

Francis B. Ford Cancer Treatment Center opened in February 2004. The $11 million project brought radiation therapy to Georgetown County for the first time. In addition to radiation therapy, the center, located on Highway 701, houses medical oncology offices and provides access to chemotherapy. The facility, which was developed as a joint project with regional cancer leader Medical University of South Carolina's Hollings Cancer Center, features state-of-the-art equipment, various support groups and educational programs.  In 2005, Francis B. Ford Cancer Treatment Center joined MUSC Hollings Cancer Center's Research Network, establishing the infrastructure for bridging access to cancer clinical trials research across the state and enabling sites to share resources and work together in delivering quality clinical trials.

For more than 30 years, ACCC has helped oncology professionals adapt to the complex challenges of delivering quality cancer care, improving efficiencies, and integrating new technologies and innovative therapies. ACCC champions the importance of access to cancer specialists and appropriate cancer therapies, and influences and advocates for standards of excellence in cancer care throughout the nation.

As a member of ACCC, Francis B. Ford Cancer Treatment Center joins a group of more than 670 hospital cancer programs and oncology private practices which includes all members of the cancer care team: medical and radiation oncologists, surgeons, cancer program administrators and medical directors, pharmacists, oncology nurses, oncology social workers, and cancer program data managers. Every physician, nurse, administrator, and support staff at Francis B. Ford Cancer Treatment Center is considered an ACCC member and can take advantage of ACCC membership benefits, which include national meetings, educational courses, online resources, and publications.

Francis B. Ford Cancer Treatment Center is located at Yawkey Medical Park, 2405 Fraser St., Georgetown, South Carolina. The Association of Community Cancer Centers is located in Rockville, Maryland. For more information about Georgetown Hospital System’s oncology services, go to
