Your Options for Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery helps you eat less, so you can lose weight more easily. Your physician at Tidelands Health will help you decide which of these procedures is right for you:

  • Gastric bypass surgery – This procedure shrinks your stomach and makes food bypass part of your small intestine, so you feel full sooner during a meal and absorb fewer calories. If you choose this surgery, you may qualify for a minimally invasive approach that reduces pain and speeds your recovery.
  • Lap-band surgery – In this outpatient, minimally invasive procedure, your surgeon wraps a band around the top of your stomach to create a small pouch for food and limit how much you can eat. As you lose weight after the surgery, your doctor will periodically adjust the band’s tightness.
  • Sleeve gastrectomy – This minimally invasive procedure permanently removes part of your stomach to make you feel full after eating small amounts of food.

Do I Qualify for Bariatric Surgery?

If your body mass index – or BMI – is at least 40, you could be a candidate for a surgical weight-loss procedure. You also may qualify if your BMI is 35–39 and you experience obesity-related medical problems, such as sleep apnea, diabetes or high blood pressure. As you lose weight following bariatric surgery, you may find some relief from these conditions, and your improved health will let you make the most of your life.
